Amazon has begun testing a new AI-powered shopping assistant called “Buy for Me,” designed to purchase products from third-party websites when items aren’t available directly on Amazon. The feature is currently being tested with a limited group of users, the company announced in a blog post on Thursday.
If a user searches for a product that Amazon doesn’t carry, the AI agent will suggest listings from other retailers, allowing users to complete the purchase directly from the Amazon Shopping app—without needing to visit the third-party site.
Behind the scenes, the AI agent visits external websites, selects the chosen product, and even fills in the buyer’s shipping, payment, and contact details to complete the transaction on the user’s behalf.
With this move, Amazon joins a growing list of tech players—including OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity—that are exploring AI shopping agents capable of browsing the web and assisting users with purchases.
“Buy for Me” could potentially extend Amazon’s e-commerce dominance by keeping users in its ecosystem—even when shopping outside it. While the tool is still in early testing, its full rollout could signal a major shift in how consumers shop online, blending convenience, AI automation, and platform loyalty.
