Apple is reportedly in early discussions with Google to use its Gemini AI to power a completely overhauled version of Siri, according to Bloomberg. The move follows internal delays that have now pushed Siri’s major upgrade timeline to 2026.
Custom Gemini for Apple: Google has already trained a custom Gemini model designed to run on Apple’s private servers, with testing already underway.
Two Siri paths: Apple is currently developing two internal versions of Siri—“Linwood”, built on Apple’s own AI models, and “Glenwood”, powered by external tech like Gemini.
Other suitors in the mix: Apple has also explored partnerships with Anthropic and OpenAI. In fact, ChatGPT is already integrated into some Siri answering features.
No decision yet: Bloomberg reports that Apple is still “several weeks away” from choosing whether to go with in-house AI, an external partner, or which partner to pick.
While Apple has taken heat for falling behind in the AI race, this may be a smart pivot. Partnering with a top-tier AI lab like Google, Anthropic, or OpenAI could mean a much better Siri for iPhone users—without waiting years for Apple to catch up on its own.
With top AI talent already fleeing Apple for competitors, betting on an outside model might not just be Plan B—it might be Apple’s best shot at winning in AI.
