With Tesla's announcement in 2021, the era of humanoid robots has gained momentum. Sanctuary AI, based in Vancouver, just unveiled its own humanoid robot called Phoenix. Standing at 5'7" and weighing 155 pounds, Phoenix aims to augment or even replace humans with its impressive capabilities.

Phoenix is capable of lifting payloads up to 55 pounds and can travel at speeds of up to three miles per hour. Its complex hands, equipped with 20 degrees of freedom, rival human dexterity and manipulation. The proprietary haptic technology even mimics the sense of touch.

Sanctuary AI's previous iteration of the robot was deployed in a retail store pilot, where it successfully completed various tasks such as merchandise picking and packing, cleaning, labeling, and folding.

Creating a "general-purpose" humanoid robot is a significant challenge, as it must be capable of performing a wide range of tasks. Sanctuary designed Phoenix to be the most sensor-rich and physically capable humanoid, driven by its Carbon platform and proprietary AI control system.

According to Geordie Rose, co-founder and CEO of Sanctuary AI, they envision a future where general-purpose robots are as common as cars, assisting in tasks where there is a shortage of human labor.

Sanctuary AI has secured substantial funding, including a Series A round of nearly $60 million and a $30 million investment from the Canadian government. These investments reflect the potential of humanoid robots and the importance of Sanctuary's Carbon-based mind AI control system.

While Phoenix may not have the sleek appearance often seen in renders, it represents significant progress in the development of humanoid robots. We are still in the early stages of this technology, and Sanctuary AI's accomplishments showcase the ongoing race to create the ideal humanoid robot.
