Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, and 1,332 signatories, including Apple's co-founder, Steve Wozniak, call for a temporary halt to the development of advanced AI systems in a statement titled "Pause Giant AI Experiments: An Open Letter."
The statement raises concern about the possible consequences of continued creation of "AI systems with human-competitive intelligence," which are poised to automate human jobs, flood information channels with untruths, and ultimately replace humans.
The signatories argue that the development of powerful AI systems should only be considered when their creators are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable.
Therefore, they call on all AI labs to immediately pause the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 for at least 6 months. If such a pause cannot be enacted quickly, governments should step in and institute a moratorium.
On the other hand, AI has become a hot topic, with tech giants like Google and Microsoft competing to improve their versions of AI systems. Fake images generated by AI have also become a concern, as they can go viral and spread disinformation.
In response, Musk announced new measures to curb the proliferation of AI bots on Twitter, stating that only verified accounts will be eligible to be in "For You" recommendations starting April 15th.
