Elon Musk is reportedly developing plans to launch a new AI start-up to compete with OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT. Musk has assembled a team of AI researchers & engineers, and secured high-powered GPU processors from Nvidia.
Musk is in discussions with investors from SpaceX & Tesla to fund his new venture. This comes after he led a letter calling for a pause on development of GPT-style models over safety concerns.
The new company aims to build large language models capable of producing human-like writing or realistic imagery. Musk is recruiting engineers from top AI labs like DeepMind.
This move puts Musk in direct competition with OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed group he co-founded in 2015 but left the board 3 years later. He has criticized OpenAI for lack of transparency and commercial focus.
Musk's new AI venture is separate from his other companies, but may use Twitter content as data to train language models and tap into Tesla's computing resources. He's also excited about Tesla's homegrown supercomputer, Dojo.
