Exciting news from south-west England! Artificial intelligence will be used to predict and prevent pollution, improving water quality in Combe Martin seaside resort.

Sensors placed in rivers and fields will gather data on local rivers, rainfall, and soil conditions. This information will be combined with satellite imagery to assess vulnerability.

The AI system will predict when the river system is most at risk from things like agricultural runoff. This will enable timely measures such as delaying fertilizer application to protect water quality.

Computer systems company CGI and mapping experts Ordnance Survey are leading the project, achieving over 90% accuracy during test runs.

The pilot project takes place in the North Devon Biosphere Reserve, an important protected area with diverse habitats. If successful, the initiative could expand across the UK.

The goal is to clean up Combe Martin, where water quality has been a concern. By tackling pollution sources like the River Umber, the project aims to provide cleaner bathing water and enhance the resort's appeal.

Real-time data from floating water sensors will play a crucial role. These sensors monitor key indicators such as pH, ammonia, dissolved oxygen, and water clarity.

Around 50 connected sensors are being used across the catchment area, providing valuable insights into water, soil, and rainfall. Ordnance Survey integrates this information with satellite imagery, enhancing the AI model's accuracy.

The project's success relies on training the AI model with historical data and real-time information to identify pollution events. By leveraging AI, farmers can receive actionable advice, reducing the risk of water contamination.

Exciting times ahead as this AI project moves beyond the testing phase and aims to expand its positive impact on water quality across the UK. Let's work together to protect our environment for future generations!
