Google has delayed the launch of its generative AI chatbot, Bard, in the European Union, according to the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC). The DPC stated that Google did not provide adequate information and the launch will not happen as planned.

OpenAI's ChatGPT, a rival chatbot, has been accessible in the EU since its free research preview, without restrictions on location. Concerns have been raised by EU DPAs regarding data protection issues, transparency, disinformation, child safety, and user rights.

The DPC did not disclose specific concerns related to Bard but mentioned ongoing examination and collaboration with other DPAs. EU DPAs established a taskforce to coordinate enforcement on ChatGPT, and the DPC aims to contribute to this effort.

Unlike ChatGPT, no hard ban has been imposed on Bard in Ireland. The delay is attributed to inadequate information provided by Google and unanswered data protection questions. The DPC's commissioner emphasized the need for regulatory clarity before rushing into prohibitions.

It remains unclear what privacy disclosures and user controls may be required for Bard. Investigations into ChatGPT's GDPR compliance are ongoing. Google states its commitment to engaging with experts, regulators, and policymakers to responsibly make Bard available in the EU.

Privacy regulators and experts play a crucial role in shaping the responsible deployment of AI chatbots like Bard. Transparency, user control, and data protection must be prioritized as these powerful AI tools become more widely available.

While the DPC's concerns regarding Bard are not fully disclosed, the focus on privacy and data protection highlights the need for robust regulations and responsible AI development. The conversation between tech giants and regulators continues as the future of AI unfolds.
