Microsoft is reportedly preparing to unveil its next-generation Maia 300 AI chip as early as September, as it looks to reduce its reliance on Nvidia and strengthen its homegrown AI infrastructure.
The move comes as Microsoft ramps up its custom silicon strategy. The company is reportedly targeting more than 300,000 Maia 300 chips by 2027, with ambitions to eventually secure capacity for over 1 million.
Microsoft spends billions on AI hardware, much of it from Nvidia. Building its own accelerators could give the company greater control over costs, supply and AI infrastructure while putting it in closer competition with Google and Amazon, which already operate major in-house chip programs.
The bigger AI race isn't just about better models anymore. It's also about who controls the chips that power them.
