New York City's education department has prohibited access to ChatGPT, a chatbot that employs machine learning to craft lifelike text, citing concerns for safety and accuracy. OpenAI released ChatGPT in November 2022, which has sparked both fascination and apprehension about the growth of artificial intelligence systems in creative sectors. The chatbot's capabilities are debatable, with Stack Overflow having banned it in December for providing incorrect answers to programming queries. Despite this, some teachers are reportedly concerned that the technology could enable students to cheat on assignments. The New York Times recently provided examples of ChatGPT's writing that were indistinguishable from human students' writing. A spokesperson for OpenAI said that while they were incorporating feedback, they do not want ChatGPT to be employed for misleading purposes, hence the development of safeguards. The education department spokesperson suggested that while the chatbot might provide easy answers, it does not build essential critical-thinking or problem-solving abilities.
