Breaking News: The United States is considering new restrictions on exports of AI chips to China, according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

Shares of Nvidia ($NVDA) fell over 2% and Advanced Micro Devices ($AMD) dropped around 1.5% in extended trading following this news.

The Commerce Department is reportedly planning to halt shipments of chips made by Nvidia and other chip companies to customers in China starting as early as July.

Nvidia, Micron, and AMD are caught in the crossfire between China and the Biden administration, as tensions rise over technology exports.

In September, U.S. officials asked Nvidia to stop exporting two top computing chips for AI work to China. Nvidia responded by introducing the A800 chip and modifying the H100 to comply with regulations.

However, the new restrictions being considered by the Commerce Department could potentially ban the sale of even A800 chips without a special U.S. export license, the WSJ report noted.

The Commerce Department is yet to respond to a Reuters request for comment on this matter. More updates to follow.
